How Electricity Works

Electricity works when a circuit is made of a conductor, a load or electricity-consuming device and a ground. Electricity will flow through the conductor to the load and finally to the ground to complete the circuit.

Electricity becomes dangerous when you become part of the circuit, because the closest path to ground may be through you, causing an electrical shock.

When you are shocked by electricity, your muscles contract. Voluntary respiration can be halted and heart fibrillation can occur resulting in heart failure. Even if an electrical shock is not strong enough to cause a fatality, it could cause you to jolt or fall.

The only person who should be doing any electrical work is a qualified, licensed electrician who has been trained to avoid electrical hazards when working on or near exposed energized parts, and is familiar with all of the safety-related work practices.
