Last year for the first time, sales of holiday LED lights
surpassed incandescent lights. Even though a string of holiday LED lights costs
about twice as much as same-sized incandescent bulbs, LEDs are so long-lasting,
the price differential is made up after two or three years of use. LED bulbs typically are made of lightweight
plastic and less likely to break than glass incandescent bulbs.
LEDs use 10 percent of the electricity that incandescent
light bulbs do. If you are using incandescent Christmas lights, you can
typically only string together 2-5 strands from one plug before you overload
the line and blow a fuse in the strands. Because the LED lights use 10 times
less energy, you can string together many more of them.
LED lights are a great upgrade to your holiday decorations for
their appearance and safety. LED technology uses little energy and produces
very little heat, which in turn also reduces the risk of fire. If you are not
using them now you should upgrade soon as the U.S. government has passed
measures to phase out incandescent light bulbs in favor of more
energy-efficient lighting alternatives.
