Holiday Light Safety

It’s that time of year again, when the most festive of folks build awesome holiday light displays in and around their homes. Very few things are as unique to the winter holiday season as the custom of decorating your home and yard.

While holiday lighting contributes to the brightness of the season, it can also significantly increase the risk of fires and electrical injuries if not used safely.  Whether your holiday lights are a simple adornment or a spectacle that can been seem from space, the number one concern for holiday lights should always be safety first.

Check each string or set of lights, new or old, for broken or cracked sockets, loose connections, or frayed or bare wires. Discard all damaged cords. Indoors or out, use only lights that have been tested for safety. The lights should have the Underwriter's Laboratories (UL) label.

Uncoil extension cords completely before using, and be sure to place them away from heat sources and bulbs. Never place cords under rugs and doors or through windows where they might be pinched or become worn. Don't overload outlets or extension cords.
