Ground Fault Interrupt Circuits Are Not Fuses

A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) is a device that shuts off an electric power circuit when it detects that current is flowing along an unintended path, such as through water or a person. It's there to protect people from electrical shock, so it is completely different from a fuse.

A GFCI monitors the amount of current flowing from hot to neutral. If there is any imbalance, it trips the circuit. GFCIs are generally installed where electrical circuits may accidentally come into contact with water. They are most often found in kitchens, bath and laundry rooms, outside or in the garage. GFCIs will fail to work safely and correctly if they are wired improperly.
